Glebe History

Since the first homestead was built in the Glebe in 1832, many events in Canadian history have played out here. The Ottawa Glebe grew out of a Clergy Reserve granted to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church in 1837. By the 1890s it was a streetcar suburb two miles south of Parliament Hill. Bank street shops began opening their doors in 1895 and continue to host some of Ottawa's trendiest shops. Historic attractions which can still be seen today include the Rideau Canal, Aberdeen Pavilion and Lansdowne Park.
