Winterlude 2020 Highlights Near You

It’s back! The much-loved Winterlude festival celebrating all things winter returns over three weekends starting Jan. 31 to Family Day on Feb. 17. There’s ice skating and sculptures, live music and cultural performances, and snow activities for the whole family to enjoy.

There are a few locations around the city hosting a variety of events during Winterlude and we’re highlighting several of them. Check out the list below, find your favourite events, and celebrate winter in Ottawa!

Sparks Street (between Bank and Elgin streets)

  1. Winterlude Kick-Off Party: Sparks Street is hosting the Kick-Off Party, which will feature performances by Sarahmée, DJ NDN and Virginia to Vegas. A special number to highlight the importance of the Métis Nation will also be featured throughout the evening.

Schedule: Jan. 31 (7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.)

  1. International Ice Carving Challenge: This attraction brings together some of the best ice carvers, who promote their artistic expression by creating detailed ice art for everyone to enjoy. This challenge is one of the main attractions at Winterlude each year and one you can’t miss.

Schedule: Watch the carving Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 (9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.) and Feb. 2 (9 a.m. to noon); sculptures will be on display throughout Winterlude

  1. Lights & Interactivity Path: From futuristic fairy-tale flipbook wheels and sound waves to shadows coming alive, explore the largest interactive light path to ever be seen at Winterlude. It’ll spark your curiosity and leave you with a memorable experience.

  1. The Hockey Circus Show: PAZ, an award-winning acrobat who has performed around the world, is sure to keep your family entertained with this hockey-themed circus act. Hockey enthusiasts will love it, but you don’t have to be a fan to enjoy the show.

Bank Street

  1. Fire & Ice Winter Festival: Presented by the Bank Street BIA, experience an event of art, acrobatic performances, exhibitions and more at the Fire & Ice Winter Festival. Be sure to bring your skates and enjoy the street skating rink that’s open for all ages to enjoy. 

Schedule: Feb. 8 & 9 (10 a.m. to midnight) 

  1. Snowmania in the Glebe: If heading to the Glebe is on your radar, don’t miss Snowmania. With large snow carvings of Canadian wildlife scattered throughout the neighbourhood and a chance to build your own snow sculpture, Snowmania has fun for the whole family to enjoy.

Jacques-Cartier Park (Snowflake Kingdom):

  1. Giant Snow Sculptures: During the opening weekend of Winterlude, snow sculptors will be hard at work creating giant characters placed throughout the park. Take a walk through Snowflake Kingdom to view these large snow art pieces.

  1. Snowflake Kingdom for the Kids: Snowflake Kingdom is the place to be if you’re a kid. A variety of events are taking place, including an introduction to downhill skiing and snowboarding, treasure hunts, challenge courses, giant games, super slides, tug-of-wars, zip lining, ice digging, face painting and so much more!

Rideau Canal Skateway:

Grab your skates and head down to the world’s largest skating rink for a day in the outdoors. While only a portion of the canal is open so far, we’ve got our fingers crossed that the Skateway, which stretches for 7.8 kilometres, will be open for the whole route from the Château Laurier to the Hartwell Locks. Before heading out for a skate, be sure to check this interactive map that displays the ice conditions.
