Top 10 Activities For Father's Day In Ottawa
Father’s Day & festivals... and more!
It’ll be a busy weekend coming up, what with Father’s Day on June 16 and the summer entertainment season is heating up!
On Father’s Day alone, there are several festivals to help Dad celebrate his day, if that’s his thing. Here are ten to check out, with a few non-festival suggestions if he’s not a festival fan:
1) Fringe Festival:
The Ottawa Fringe Festival runs from June 13 to 23. If you’ve never been, this theatre festival truly is fringe. Performances are not curated (acts are chosen by lottery) and there is no restriction on content, as long as it’s legal. The Fringe website does highlight which shows are family friendly though.
This Ottawa Caribbean festival wraps up on Father’s Day with a 20th anniversary block party featuring music, dancing, food, kid activities and more. Details.
3) Italian Week:
Ottawa Italian Week also wraps up on Father’s Day, offering the experience of “Being Italian” and celebrating all that is Italian art, culture and history. Highlights include a street party and Ferrari Festival. Details.
4) CMAO Awards:
If you like country, celebrate the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards at the National Arts Centre on June 16, with a Tailgate Party before the show. Details.
5) Cruise the canal (or river):
If you want to explore the Rideau Canal, Ottawa River or other area waterways, there are several options available from sightseeing cruises to dinner and fireworks. Details here.
6) Go fishing:
What says “a day with Dad” more than going fishing? Recognizing that, the province has set aside Father’s Day weekend as one of a few during the season where you can fish without a licence. Head to your favourite spot and spend some cherished time with Dad. Details.
7) Green thumbs:
If Dad is more of a green thumb, explore Ottawa’s Garden Promenade as part of Ottawa Garden Days, which runs from June 15 to 23. Garden Promenade is a 15-kilometre route of gardens from Rideau Hall to the Experimental Farm gardens to Parliament Hill. Details.
8) Museum brunch:
The Museum of Nature’s Father’s Day brunch is back. Two seating times are available and you can explore the museum after you eat. Details.
9) Heritage workshop:
Treat Dad to a unique museum experience with a heritage-inspired workshop at the Cumberland Museum. Themes include woodworking, letterpress printing, gardening and acrylic painting. Bring the whole family to the museum and enjoy fun and games on the grounds while Dad learns the ins and outs of his new trade. Details.
10) Vintage cars:
If Dad’s a car buff, check out the Vintage Car Show at the Billings Estate, where antique car owners are invited to show off their rides and share their stories. Details.
