March Break Madness
March Break Madness
You’d think it had never happened before. Here comes the annual March Break and we’re breaking in to a “what will we do” panic. Despite a fond love of our sofa, tv and video games we don’t want to waste this week so here’s the best of what the city has to offer to keep you sane and kids entertained.
Sure they’re busy but with so many museums in Ottawa you could visit one a day throughout the break and still not see them all. There are so many choices and it’s an outstanding way to spend the day whether its blue whales, planes, dinosaurs, totems or fine art that floats your boat. Most museums have different workshops available to keep the troupes busy: head to Carp for the return of The Diefenbunker’s ever-popular Spy Camp back for 2017 that offers a daily changing theme and challenge for your cunning operatives.
Make a splash and dive in to one of Ottawa’s many pools! Go local or enjoy the combo pools, hot tub & steam room at the Plant Bath and grab some Chinese takeaway for dinner!
Sweet times lie ahead when the sap starts to run and sugar shacks open their doors in and around Ottawa. It’s a pleasant time to be outdoors with the warmer weather but still some snow in the wooded areas. Boost your metabolism with a brief hike to burn calories and eyeball the metal buckets before indulging in maple flavoured deliciousness. The region has quite a few to choose from including Ottawa’s only urban sugar shack in Richelieu Park’s Vanier Museopark – a bonus at this central location is the small museum and library.
If your kids still have energy to burn, try one of the many activity centres to stop them from climbing the curtains. Here are a couple of our favourites! Altitude Gym in Gatineau has a climbing wall the whole family can enjoy, they also offer day camps and frequently have free childcare on site. As an alternative to bouncing off the walls check-in at Skyzone where kids can trampoline away excess energy.
Savour that last bit of winter and, weather permitting, head for the ski hills. If you want a break from the slopes sign up the kids for lessons and take a well-deserved breather. Fortune, Mont Cascades and Edelweiss provide a range of options or consider strapping on snowshoes for an afternoon of cross-country.
Imagine Cinema always has great and inexpensive film programming so make a day of it and head to the St Laurent Shopping Centre for a film, lunch and perhaps a spring outfit!
Finally, had enough running around? You are now the confirmed master of keeping boredom at bay so grab a game or dvd from the local branch of the Ottawa Public Library and chill.
