Five magnificent golf getaways

You’re not a big fan of winter, but get bored witless stretched out on a beach for hours.

A golf getaway to the sun is a wonderful way to get a healthy helping of vitamin C, (a modest amount) of exercise and a great deal of pleasure (fine food, better wine and the occasional visit to the spa).

These trips are not for the financially timid, but hey, we live once.

1.Dream game

Destination: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Carmel, California

Back story: Pebble Beach is the golf destination of a lifetime. Hugging the Pacific, the iconic public course has been the stage for the annual AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and five U.S. Open Championships. Hello Tiger Woods.

Bedtime: The Inn at Spanish Bay(  Staff are keen to pamper, from massages to saunas and yummy dinners, get ready to relaaxxx.

What it will cost: Rooms start at $695 U.S. for a one bedroom room with a garden view, reaching up to $4,010 a night for a two-bedroom Spanish Bay Suite. Guests are required to stay two or three nights to book a round of golf for $495. Caddies are recommended at $80 per golfer. You can rent clubs, Taylormade for $95

The experience: Priceless. Well not really, but Visa or Mastercard works.

  1. Desert heat

Destination: The Boulders, Carefree, Arizona(the

Back story: The newly-renovated Boulders Resort and Spa sits in the high Sonoran desert overlooking one of the best golf courses in the United States. If you get tired of golf (how can that ever happen), then there is tennis, swimming and a long list of healthy options at the spa.

What it will cost: Rooms start at $299 per night, golf is extra

The experience: Play golf and then meditate or meditate and play golf. Your choice.

  1. More desert heat

Destination: Among folks in the know, Phoenix is L.A. without the Pacific, yet boasting more than 200 amazing golf destinations, high-end shopping and yummy restaurants  ... all in the Sonoran Desert. Add Scottsdale and your winter escape is complete. Troon North ( is the king of the Scottsdale public courses that deliver cacti, arroyos, rock out cropping and wonderful views of Pinnacle Peak.

What it will cost: A round of golf at Troon North will set you back $189 to $249. The Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale, a five-star facility with a decided Southwest style, is only a short drive from the course. Rooms start at $441.

The experience: Sun, sand and the best golf in the whole of the United States. Enjoy.

  1. Pack extra balls

Destination: Hammock Beach Resort Hotel, Palm Coast, Florida

Back story: Bring along extra balls ‘cause six holes on this Jack Nicklaus-designed course, which was voted the #1 resort in Florida, sits beside the Atlantic. Get ready to be distracted by shy brides, because the Salamander Golf & Spa Resort is a popular choice for wedding celebrations

.What it will cost: Rates start at an affordable $185 per night at this sprawling, snowy white hotel complex. It’s best to bring along another couple since the rate is based on four adult golfers sharing a three-bedroom villa for a minimum of two nights. 

The experience: When the game is over, slip on your bathing suit and stroll along the endless beach. There will be time for a massage before a late dinner. Promise.

  1. Peachy golf

Destination:Sea Island Georgia Resorts, The Cloister & The Lodge (

Back story: This 54-hole resort will keep you happy and swinging for days. This is the course where Davis Love 111 learned how to negotiate water hazards and master the game of golf. If your game falters, don’t fret, the resort has a strong history of turning out teaching greats, including Todd Anderson and Jared Zak.. And if that doesn’t work, cool your jets, it is the only resort in the world to achieve four Forbes Five Stars eight years in a row. That means good dinners and sweet spa experiences.

What it will cost: Rooms start at $595, but check availability because this is a popular resort.
