It may not seem like fall thanks to the recent burst of summer weather we’ve had but, believe it or not, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. And you may have noticed that the leaves are turning colour and dropping. That’s because they respond to the shortening days rather than the heat.

All of this means it’s harvest time! Think plump turkeys, perfect pumpkins and a bounty of local apples. It’s the time of year when it’s easy to wish we all lived on a farm to reap the rewards of the harvest. But even if we’re city dwellers, we can escape to the country for the day to enjoy some fun and some produce or, if you’d rather, take advantage of what’s delivered almost to our door.

Made for you, close to home

Not interested in tromping out to the farm to find your fixins? Then shop local for delicious pies, starting with Life of Pie right in Ottawa South. They also offer prepared meals, but have no details just yet on Thanksgiving. Three Tarts in Centretown also offers a selection of autumn fruit pies, with multiple apple options.

If you love the fresh finds at a farmers’ market, look no further than the Ottawa Farmers’ Market at Lansdowne Park. You’ll find those fresh fruit pies and much more.

Gobble gobble

What if you want a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner with all the fixings, but not the fussing? Here are a few options for full turkey dinners you can pre-order and pick up to take home:

Red Apron: Red Apron has a whole Thanksgiving menu to choose from, including a whole butter-and-herb-basted local turkey with all the trimmings that generously feeds 12 ($275) or a more intimate dinner for two ($35). You can also order a yummy pumpkin pie.

Le Café: The restaurant at the NAC is offering a “turkey takeaway”. They’ll do all the work and you simply pick it up and bring it home. Meals start at $199, which feeds 8 to 10.

Bytown Catering: It’s offering a similar turkey dinner starting at $190 that feeds 6 to 8.

Down on the farm

If you’re feeling a little adventurous, make it a fun family outing to go apple picking. The following all offer pick-your-own or you can buy picked-for-you. Most also have lots of fun activities such as petting zoos and wagon rides.

Log Cabin Orchard: Located in Osgoode; there are apples, pumpkins and lots of bakery items.

Mountain Orchards: In Mountain, just east of Kemptville; extras include a corn maze and forest trail.

Cannamore Orchard: Located in Crysler; with lots of fun activities for the kids plus apples, pumpkins and a country market.

Pinewood Orchards: This one doesn’t have the extra activities, but it makes up for it by being so close to the city core, located in Kanata near the Queensway and March Road.
