See you at the market

There’s something to be said for the authenticity and freshness of farmers’ market finds. More popular than ever these days, there’s a new crop of seasonal markets set to join Ottawa’s growing list of produce vendor locations.

While by no means a complete list of the farmers’ markets in the area, here is a selection of ones set to open soon.

Lansdowne Park

Unlike most, this one’s open all year, moving inside the Aberdeen Pavilion over winter. Vendors will head back outside May 7. Find local grains, meats, cheeses, produce, baked goods and sweets, as well as artisan crafts and jewelry.

When: Sundays, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Aberdeen Square (access via Queen Elizabeth Drive)

ByWard Market

A list of markets would be incomplete without the granddaddy of them all, the historic ByWard Market, which has been running since it was founded by Col. John By in 1826. As a popular tourist attraction, the market is open all year and features a variety of products, but agri-food vendors typically operate only in the warmer months.

When: Daily, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: 55 ByWard Market Square

Parkdale Market

Second only to the ByWard Market in terms of its popularity, the Parkdale Market has been around since 1924 and is known for its flowers and shrubs. It’s also open daily as of April 28, making it a convenient stop for fresh goods.

When: Daily, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Where: Parkdale Avenue at Wellington Street West

Byron Park, Westboro

Operating for five years although only officially approved this spring, find up to 50 vendors at this market in the Byron Linear Park. It opens May 13.

When: Saturdays, 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Where: Byron and Golden avenues

Although nowhere near the city core, one of the most popular markets is the Carp Farmers’ Market, which has been around since 1990 and saw a record number of vendors and sales last year. It opens for the season May 13.

When: Saturdays, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Where: Carp Fairgrounds, 3790 Carp Rd.

Old Ottawa East

Following a hiccough that forced the Main Farmers’ Market to relocate to the Museum of Nature while Main Street was under construction, it’s now back and set to open May 6.

When: Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: 210 Main St.

While farmers’ markets are almost expected to be organic, there’s one that makes the point by calling itself an organic market, plus it’s year-round. The Ottawa Organic Farmers’ Market offers certified organic meats, breads, vegetables, fruits, olive oil, teas, herbs, and skin care products.

When: Saturdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Where: 1644 Bank St., near Heron Road
