All I want for Christmas is the cheque, please

We get it, not everyone wants to slave over a hot stove creating the perfect Martha Stewart turkey for the extended family who’ve invaded your home for the holidays. It can be a lot less stress, and a much more relaxed visit, if you let someone else do the cooking.

So, if you want to switch it up, here are five top spots offering traditional (and not so traditional) holiday fare this Dec. 25. But be warned, it’s best to make a reservation well in advance.

Premier address

Where else to get a classic Canadian Christmas dinner than at the capital’s prime location: the Château Laurier. The posh hotel’s Wilfrid’s Restaurant offers a four-course meal with all the trimmings. It won’t come cheap, but then it is Christmas.

When: From 5:30 p.m.

Where: Fairmont Château Laurier Hotel, 1 Rideau St.

What: Traditional Christmas dinner

Prices: $88 a person ($44 for children aged 6-12)

Info:; 613-562-7041

Orient express

If you crave a more adventurous meal, a popular choice for dim sum is the Chu Shing Chinese restaurant. Offering a selection of dim sum dishes (bite-sized portions served in small steamer baskets) or à la carte, there’s plenty to choose from.

When: 10 a.m. until midnight

Where: 691 Somerset St. W.

What: Chinese

Prices: Dim sum from $3.50 a dish; combo dinners for two from $37

Now that’s takeout

Not exactly dinner out, but the next best thing, the Brookstreet Hotel in Kanata offers a delightful prepared turkey dinner with all the fixings for 10. Simply order in advance online and pick it up to go, then enjoy your meal in the comfort of home without all the fuss of making it.

When: 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Where: 525 Legget Dr.

What: Traditional Christmas dinner

Prices: $239

Info:; 888-826-2220

A safe bet

Prefer lots of choice in your holiday meal? There’s always the array of options at the Casino du Lac-Leamy’s Banco Bistro buffet. The sumptuous spread is sure to satisfy any holiday craving. And you can try your luck at the gambling tables when you’re done.

When: 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. (reservations accepted only until 5:30, after that it’s first-come, first-served)

Where: 1 Boul. du Casino

What: Buffet

Prices: $34 a person (adults only; children not permitted in the casino)

Info:; 819-772-6220

A local institution

Last, but certainly not least, is the Elgin Street Diner, which never closes. High class it’s not, but the atmosphere is so friendly and casual you’ll think you’re at home. It doesn’t take reservations Dec. 25, though, nor does it serve alcohol.

When: 24 hours

Where: 374 Elgin St., near Gladstone

What: Diner fare or turkey dinner

Prices: From about $8.99 for breakfast to about $17.99 for turkey dinner

Info:; 613-237-9700
