5 Things To Do Around Ottawa Before Summer Ends

Summer's last gasp in the Capital City!

Before you know it, fall routines will take over our lives again and the lazy, hazy days of summer will be long gone. For some, that fall routine starts as early as next week when the French board begins its fall semester.

So, before you’re out of time, let’s check off a few more fun-in-the-summer things from the to-do list. Here are 5.

#1. Check out Alegria

This 25th anniversary revival of Cirque du Soleil’s hugely popular performance runs until Sept. 1 at the Zibi site by the Chaudiere Falls. The show, which is the latest masterful display of Cirque’s signature combination of acrobatics, theatrics and visual design, tells the story of an emerging movement that strives to shake the established order, instilling hope and renewal to bring light to a world in perfect harmony. If you’ve never seen a Cirque show, don’t miss this opportunity. Tickets start at $55. Details.

#2. Capture the Ottawa sign

Remember the big OTTAWA sign that was installed in the ByWard Market for Canada’s 150th birthday? Well, it’s about to be disassembled. It will be replaced by a more permanent sign (this one is made of plywood and can’t hold up to our winters), but for now, it’s been given a makeover by students from the Ottawa School of Art, who each claimed a letter and put their own stamp on it. Why not play tourist and snap a few pix with the sign before it’s removed?

#3. Tame the rapids

This spring, Mother Nature showed us how she was in charge when it came to the water. Now it’s our turn. Spend the day cruising the rapids, all within Ottawa’ city limits. Ottawa City Rafting, for instance, offers a trip for adventurers of all levels that takes you from Britannia Park to downtown, near the Canadian War Museum.

#4. Blowing off some hot air

Another one that should be on the bucket list if you haven’t tackled it yet is a hot air balloon ride. With perfect timing, the Gatineau Hot Air Balloon Festival runs Labour Day weekend with shows, flights, an amusement park, fireworks, a classic car exhibit, craft market and more. Fun for the whole family. Details.

#5. Head to the beach

In a recent blog, I gave you some suggestions for great places to swim around the city. There’s still time! Take advantage of the great weather we’ve been having, relax with the family and soak it all in.

Enjoy the rest of the Summer and go swimming around Ottawa!!
