5 Summer Must Do's In The Capital City

Summer's here!!

School’s out, the trees have finished leafing out, robins are onto their second nests and we keep getting hints and teases of gorgeous weather.

Since our summers are so short to begin with, it’s a good idea for us to make the most of what we get and enjoy it. With that in mind, here are 5 things you need to do this summer:

#1. Movies under the stars

Capital Pop-Up Cinema is back with free movies under the stars.

Much like its name suggests, Capital Pop-Up Cinema an outdoor cinema that plays movies throughout the summer in different locations across Ottawa. This year locations include Sparks Street, Parkdale Park, Beechwood Cemetery and the War Museum.

There are more than a dozen movies to see between June 14 and Oct. 5, including classics like A League of Their Own and The Princess Bride and family fun flicks like Hook and The Sandlot. It’s great for date night, a night out with friends or some fun family time. More info here.

#2. Circus spectacle

If you’ve never seen a Cirque du Soleil performance, this is one not to miss. The theatre company revives its hugely popular Alegria show as an updated 25th anniversary event, with the second stop on its tour (after debuting in Montreal) at the Zibi development’s Place des Festivals.

Alegría is a classic power struggle of old meets new that is reinterpreted for today’s cultural pulse. It has been known to energize audiences with a joyful spirit for a brighter and more inspiring tomorrow.

The show is scheduled to run from Aug. 1-11. For tickets and more info, check Cirque du Soleil’s site.

#3. Bucket list check

It’s been around for awhile, but this is another one of those ones to do if you never have before: yoga on Parliament Hill. Every Wednesday at noon through August, free classes are given on the Hill with hundreds taking part.

Even Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, a yoga enthusiast himself, has been known to walk by and greet participants.

Hosted by Lululemon (the yoga apparel company), a lead instructor runs the session over loud speakers while other yogis roam through the crowds to help participants as required.

Bring your own yoga mat, a water bottle and sunscreen. Sessions are weather dependent. Check the event’s Facebook page for updates.

#4. Paddle the canal

Living in the capital, it’s easy to take our city’s many treasures for granted and perhaps none more so than the Rideau Canal, which is a world heritage site that draws in tourists from around the world. Chances are we’ve probably all skated on the canal, but have you ever paddled it?

This should be a bucket list item, too, since seeing the city from the perspective of the canal is a true treat. And paddling it offers a sense of serenity and measured pace that gives you time to soak in the surroundings.

Go on a short afternoon stint or really make a commitment and travel the canal’s whole route, stopping to camp on the shores along the way. Need to rent a canoe? Try the Dows Lake Marina. And get camping info here.

#5. Meet da Vinci

The most comprehensive exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci to tour the world is in Ottawa for its first ever visit to Canada. Demonstrating the full scope of da Vinci's achievements, Leonardo da Vinci – 500 Years of Genius celebrates one of the most revered and dynamic intellects of all time.

See and interact with over 200 unique displays, including machine inventions, life-size reproductions of Leonardo’s Renaissance art, entertaining animations giving insight into his most notable works, and touchscreen versions of his actual codices. The experience includes the world’s exclusive Secrets of Mona Lisa exhibition.

The exhibit, which is on now at the Canada Science and Technology Museum, ends Sept. 2.

Enjoy this Summer!!
